The YUDW was asked by the City of West Haven to explore the future redevelopment of a strategic site on their waterfront located at the eastern end of Main Street about half a mile from the West Haven Green at the center of town. This site is highly visible from Long Island Sound and from Interstate 95, especially for southbound traffic as it crosses the West River and enters the City from the east. Currently the site is characterized by a mix of abandoned and underperforming industrial property, uncoordinated commercial and waterfront development. The YUDW project proposes a reorganization of the waterfront to maximize public open space and uses along the water, along with dramatic views to and from the site. In addition to a festive waterfront market and restaurant row, the project includes office space, an upscale hotel and conference center, an indoor sports facility and additional marina space. The overall goal is not only economic development, but also a dramatic gateway to West Haven with new public waterfront linked to the historic center of the City.
